Wellies: The outdoor footwear

By Sara Jhonson at 2012-08-06 02:31:15
Since the 19th century, the Wellington boot, commonly known as wellies, is one of the most popular outdoor footwear. From being the simple outdoor boot, wellies have evolved into a symbol of fashion with celebrities from around the world covering their lower extremities with Wellington boots of reputed brands.

Traditional wellies
The first Wellington boot was designed for the Duke of Wellington. The boot crafted from tender calfskin leather was a modified version of the Hessian boot, the popular 18th century outdoor footwear that was worn by military officers as well as civilians. Although the Wellingtons boots became fashionable footwear for the aristocracy, the footwear was primary ordered by Wellington to provide protection to the knees of cavalry soldiers during wars.

The early wellies were made of leather. To boost the popularity of the boot among common people of Europe, the wellies were converted into rubber footwear. The rubber boots were waterproof and sturdy. They became unusually popular in the early 20th century among farmers. The boots protected their feet from water and mud in the fields. During the world wars, the demand for Wellington boots increased manifold. The hunter boots were widely used by British forces that needed thigh high footwear to protect their feet and knees while traveling across inhospitable terrains and flooded fields.

Hunter wellies
The rubber wellies created by North British Rubber Company were christened Hunter boot or Hunter wellies. The boots were primarily created as outdoor footwear. The hunter boots were highly popular among soldiers during the two world wars. After the end of the Second World War, hunter wellies become the ideal wet weather footwear. The design of the boots has undergone significant change. They became highly comfortable footwear, with thick sole. The footwear that was originally designed for men evolved into footwear for women and children.

Green wellies
Green wellies was introduced by the creators of hunter boots in 1955. Despite the difference in names, the green wellies shares similar features with the earlier hunter boots. The rubber boots were renamed to increase their popularity among country folks. It helped to add a rustic charm to the traditional rubber wellies.

Several reputed footwear brands have created designers wellies. Along with the simple brown or black rubber boots, you will discover a wide selection of funky wellies in any reputed footwear outlet. For working in the garden or while traveling through the waterlogged fields, there is no footwear better than the wellies.
